CX3CR1/CX3CL1 Axis Mediates Platelet–Leukocyte Adhesion to Arterial Endothelium in Younger Patients with a History of Idiopathic Deep Vein Thrombosis
2018
AbstractMechanisms linking deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and subclinical atherosclerosis and risk of cardiovascular events are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential impact of CX3CR1/CX3CL1 axis in DVT-associated endothelial dysfunction. The study included 22 patients (age: 37.5 ± 8.2 years) with a history of idiopathic DVT and without known cardiovascular risk factors and 23 aged-matched control subjects (age: 34 ± 7.8 years). Flow cytometry was used to evaluate peripheral markers of platelet activation, leukocyte immunophenotypes and CX3CR1/CX3CL1 expression in both groups. A flow chamber assay was employed to measure leukocyte arrest under dynamic conditio…
The quality of plasma collected by automated apheresis and of recovered plasma from leukodepleted whole blood.
2005
Background There exists a current lack of information about the composition of the different types of plasma. No direct comparisons between apheresis plasma (AP) and recovered plasma (RP) derived from in-line-filtered whole blood (WB) have been published to date. Study design and methods Sixty AP units, 100 RP units from in-line-filtered WB held for 3 hours at 20 degrees C between donation and freezing, and an additional 100 RP units held for 15 hours at 20 degrees C before freezing were analyzed for coagulation factors and inhibitors, total protein, immunoglobulin G (IgG), and hemostasis and proteolysis activation markers. The influence of twice freezing and thawing on clotting factors V, …

The impact of two whole blood inline filters on markers of coagulation, complement and cell activation
2005
Background and Objectives There exists a current lack of information about the impact of different inline filters, used for the leucoreduction of whole blood (WB), on the levels of clotting factors and markers of coagulation, complement and cell activation in plasma. Only a few small comparisons of different types of WB inline filters have been published to date. Materials and Methods This study compared two plasma types of 200 units each. Both study groups were derived from WB, inline-filtered and held for 2 h at 20° between donation and filtration. Then, 200 units (Group A) were filtered using a positively charged polyester filter (Baxter RZ2000) and the other 200 units (Group B) were f…

The incidence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia in medical patients treated with low-molecular-weight heparin: a prospective cohort study.
2005
AbstractIn contrast with extensive documentation in patients treated with unfractionated heparin (UFH), the incidence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) in medical patients receiving low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is less well defined. In a prospective cohort study, the platelet count was monitored in 1754 consecutive patients referred to 17 medical centers and treated with LMWH for prophylaxis or treatment of thromboembolic disorders. The diagnosis of HIT was accepted in case of a platelet drop of at least 50%, the absence of obvious explanations for thrombocytopenia, and the demonstration of heparin-dependent IgG antibodies. HIT developed in 14 patients (0.80%; 95% CI, 0.43%-1…
Cortisol, Platelet Serotonin Content, and Platelet Activity in Patients With Major Depression and Type 2 Diabetes
2015
OBJECTIVE Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system dysfunction, serotonergic system alterations, and enhanced platelet activity may contribute to the increased cardiac risk in depression. This exploratory study examined associations between cortisol parameters, platelet serotonin (5-HT) content, and platelet activity markers in patients with newly diagnosed major depression (MD) and/or Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) compared with healthy controls. METHODS We compared cortisol awakening response (CAR), diurnal decrease in salivary cortisol concentrations (slope), platelet 5-HT, and platelet markers (CD40, CD40 ligand [CD40L], soluble CD40L, CD62P, β-thromboglobulin, and platelet factor-4) in 22 T2DM pa…
